Our surveyors use the latest survey techniques and technology supported by a full suite of application software and computing facilities. This includes terrestrial laser scanners, laser trackers, mobile laser scanners, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems, plus traditional robotic total stations and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers.

Prior to any development works commencing, AAM conducts site surveys and processes data to produce:
- Feature and contour surveys that detail the form of the terrain, existing surface infrastructure and document underground services in 3D formats
- 3D datasets for engineering and architectural design development of the existing landscape, the built environment, services infrastructure and neighbourhood context
As a project proceeds, land surveying services include:
- Dilapidation surveys that inspect sites near proposed construction works. We use still photography and video imagery to document existing faults or damage to surrounding buildings, roads, pathways, major trees and services
- Property Council of Australia (PCA) lease area surveys for retail shopping centres, commercial buildings, industrial buildings and showrooms
- Cadastral or legal title surveys and leases that define boundaries and subdivide land, buildings, mining tenements and special purpose crown leases. We also provide land identification surveys for encroachments, easements, leases or restrictive covenants

The regeneration of Rialto, one of Melbourne’s landmark buildings, involves new construction of 5,000m² of commercial office space, complex refurbishment of the existing structure and lobby space with a state-of-the-art grid shell canopy, and a new 6-storey office building connected into the existing tower.

AAM’s involvement on Melbourne’s Rialto Regeneration Project started in 2014 when the developer, Equiset, contracted AAM to perform digital scan for planning. In March 2015, Built engaged AAM as site surveyors for the project.
Working across multiple levels to achieve millimetre accuracy required innovative survey control solutions and advanced skills in surveying and laser scanning. AAM drew on the skills and experience of its team of surveyors, modellers and specialists to problem-solve during construction, and provide Equiset and its consultants a single dataset of as-builts and building models -- a consistent “single point of truth” for design.
AAM then added additional scan data to create streetscapes, conducted complex title re-establishment and produced “water-tight” 3D models to enable 3D printing of the precinct. AAM supplied these in collaborative dealings with designers, architects and engineers.
AAM Survey General Manager, Braith McClure, said that onsite surveyors were required to meet the day-to-day challenges of the “sophisticated and at times, challenging build”. Complex calculations were needed to optimise the location of the grid shell roof, supporting brackets and unique attachments over three stages of the build. Exceptionally tight tolerances required advanced set out and checking/validation that was unique in position and orientation at every location. “AAM’s proven complex construction surveying experience resulted in the seamless erection of the structure to its design location,” Braith notes.
Chadstone shopping centre
The expansion of Chadstone shopping centre, in Melbourne, adds thousands of square metres of office and retail space. A key design feature is the free-form steel and glass gridshell roof, a 7,080 sqm steel structure with 2,672 panes of insulating glass. This complex structure flexes and moves during construction.
Scope of AAM survey services: Construction survey works, set out, as-built and monitoring
AAM’s role is to perform construction survey works, set out, as-built and advanced “dimensional control” monitoring of the massive steel and glass shell roof; verifying the glass and steel framework are constructed in the right place and monitoring the movement of the steel frame as tonnes of glass panels are inserted.
Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC)
The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) is a landmark $1 billion purpose-built centre for cancer research, treatment, education and care in Melbourne's Parkville medical precinct. The facility contains a 13-storey atrium, laboratories, operating theatres, education and retail spaces, and treatment rooms. A 37 metre long, 11.5 metre high double-storey bridge connects the VCCC to the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s new intensive care unit, operating theatres and procedure rooms.
Scope of AAM survey services: site surveyor for the entire life of the VCCC project
The AAM site survey team was responsible for servicing all spatial and survey needs over the life of the project. Our involvement with this project started in 2012, when, in preparation for the VCCC construction, AAM performed a terrestrial laser scan of Royal Melbourne Hospital to upgrade the accuracy of the BIM. The laser scan covered critical areas information was required for construction—increasing confidence in the BIM information in the most cost-effective manner for Grocon. The construction survey works included dilapidation surveys, scanning for modelling and BIM creation, title and cadastral surveys, construction set out, monitoring, dimensional control, survey positioning of all structural elements and documentation of as-constructed features.
